Plan podcast listening time and storage
Two estimates help when planning a commute, a queue, or offline listening. They use information you already have and do not require uploading a feed.
Listening time at a faster speed
Divide episode duration by playback speed. A 60-minute episode at 1.5× takes 40 minutes: 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40. This assumes the player maintains that speed for the whole episode.
Estimated audio download size
Multiply bitrate in kilobits per second by duration in seconds, then divide by 8,000 to get decimal megabytes:
size MB = bitrate kbps × seconds ÷ 8000
For a 45-minute episode at 128 kbps: 128 × 2,700 ÷ 8,000 = 43.2 MB.
Why the real file can differ
Variable bitrate audio changes bitrate as the sound changes. Containers, embedded artwork, and metadata also add bytes. An RSS episode enclosure can declare a byte length, but that publisher supplied value may be missing or stale. Treat either method as a planning estimate until the download completes.
Try the calculators
Use the OpenPod browser tools for both calculations. They run locally.
